Nelson Mandela Died in Prison?<\/h1>\n

Nelson Mandela died in prison, long before his loss on December 5th, 2013.<\/p>\n

Many people \u2014 perhaps thousands \u2014 seem to believe that.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where the title of this website, The Mandela Effect, <\/em>came from.<\/p>\n

See, I thought Nelson Mandela died in prison.\u00a0 I thought<\/em> I remembered it clearly, complete with news clips of his funeral, the mourning in South Africa, some rioting in cities, and the heartfelt speech by his widow.<\/p>\n

Then, I found out he was still alive.<\/p>\n

My reaction was sensible, \u201cOh, I must have misunderstood something on the news.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t think about it again for many years, until \u2014 in the VIP suite at Dragon*Con \u2014 a member of Security (\u201cShadow\u201d) casually mentioned that many people \u201cremember\u201d when Nelson Mandela died in prison.<\/p>\n

That caught my attention in a hurry.<\/p>\n

One thing led to another, and I discovered a large community of people who remember the same Mandela history that I recall.<\/p>\n

Others have similar \u201cfalse\u201d memories.\u00a0 One of the most recent and prevalent is the death of Billy Graham.\u00a0 Though some claim that people are confusing that with Mr. Graham\u2019s retirement, or perhaps the televised funeral of Mr. Graham\u2019s wife, those who clearly remember the events disagree heartily.<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s not just deaths.\u00a0 People have told me about a variety of odd conflicts between their vivid memories and the world they\u2019re currently living in.<\/p>\n

During Dragon*Con 2010, someone insisted that he remembered a Star Trek<\/em> episode that \u2014 according to one star of the show \u2014 was never filmed.\u00a0 The person who remembered the alternate episode wasn\u2019t weird or wild-eyed\u2026 he was a very normal<\/em> person, and only referenced the episode as part of a routine conversation.<\/p>\n

I was there when he heard that the episode never existed.\u00a0 He was stunned, and quickly tried to find a logical explanation for his \u201cfaulty\u201d memory.<\/p>\n

Another quirky \u201cfalse\u201d memory involves the preview and pre-release of the sequel to the movie, Avatar.<\/em><\/p>\n

These aren\u2019t simple errors in memory; they seem to be fully-constructed incidents (or sequential events) from the past.\u00a0 They exceed the normal range of forgetfulness.<\/p>\n

Even stranger, other people seem to have identical memories.<\/em><\/p>\n

If you believed that Nelson Mandela died in prison \u2014 long before his passing (in this timestream) on 5 December 2013 \u2014\u00a0 or you have similar memories of a \u201cdifferent\u201d past, you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n
