Inconsistencies that lead some to believe that they\u2019re actually living in a universe other than their own?<span id=\"more-20346\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon has come to be called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.strangerdimensions.com\/2015\/01\/24\/mandela-effect-proof-parallel-universes\/\">Mandela Effect<\/a>. It\u2019s the strange problem of having memories that go against reality. You could even call them <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strangerdimensions.com\/2012\/03\/21\/john-titor-the-alter-vu-phenomenon\/\">Alter-vus<\/a>. That is, of course, if you believe they might be due to a meddling time traveler.<\/p>\n<p>Well, while time travel and parallel universes may not be the culprit here (we could all simply be misremembering things), it\u2019s an interesting phenomenon nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s have a look at some of these other incorrect memories that people have reported. Maybe you\u2019re right, maybe you\u2019re wrong. But some remember it being to the northwest of Australia, when in actuality it is to the southeast.<\/p>\n<h2>Forrest Gump<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CJh59vZ8ccc?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve seen the movie, you know the iconic scene: Forrest Gump is sitting on a bench, and offers a chocolate to the woman sitting next to him. What does he say, again? \u201cMy momma always said, \u2018Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you\u2019re gonna get.\u2019\u201d That\u2019s how many remember it. But you know what? It\u2019s actually \u201cLife <em>was<\/em> like a box of chocolates.\u201d Curious that even this video\u2019s title got it wrong.<\/p>\n<h2>Star Wars<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bv20ZoBcdO8?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In yet\u00a0another iconic movie scene, Darth Vader has bested Luke Skywalker in combat at Cloud City, and he reveals a startling truth: \u201cLuke,\u201d he says, \u201cI am your father.\u201d Or does he? In reality, he says, \u201cNo, <em>I<\/em> am your father.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TsI3lFHkU_s\">Maybe this has something to do with it.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h2>Mirror, Mirror<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mqmIMvWnIV8\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In <em>Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs<\/em>, the Evil Queen gazes into her mystical mirror and says, \u201cMirror, Mirror on the wall, who\u2019s the fairest of them all?\u201d Except she doesn\u2019t: it\u2019s actually \u201c<em>Magic mirror<\/em> on the wall,\u00a0who is the fairest one of all?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Won\u2019t You Be My Neighbor?<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zMUGJZrR9Jg?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When Fred Rodgers sang his well-known tune at the beginning of his show, <em>Mr. Rodgers\u2019 Neighborhood<\/em>, maybe you sang along. Try it with me: \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, it\u2019s a\u2026\u201d Wait, that\u2019s actually not quite correct.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s \u201cA beautiful day in <em>this<\/em> neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Dilemma<\/h2>\n<p>Dilemma. A simple word. But there are many out there who will look at it and see something very wrong. Because they remember it as Dilemna, with a silent \u201cn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dilemna.info\/\">an entire website dedicated to this one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cBeam me up, Scotty!\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beam_me_up,_Scotty\">\u2026was never uttered in any episode of Star Trek.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Number of U.S. States<\/h2>\n<p>Some remember the United States as having 51 or even 52 states.<\/p>\n<p>The correct answer: 50. Just 50.<\/p>\n<h2>From the comments\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Several individuals in the comments section of that old Berenst#in Bears post provided some unique experiences of their own. Here are a few I found particularly interesting (click their names to view the original comments).<\/p>\n<h3>Caps opening the other way?<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI also remember bottle caps opening the other way. I distinctly remember one day in high school going to open a can of Dr Pepper, turning clockwise, and being surprised and very disturbed when it tightened rather than opening. I\u2019m quite confident I didn\u2019t, one day, suddenly forget how to open bottles, and I don\u2019t recall suffering a traumatic brain injury either. Has anyone else noticed any other timeline discrepancies?\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strangerdimensions.com\/2015\/01\/21\/the-berenstin-bears-problem-are-we-living-in-an-alternate-worldline\/#comment-2174131219\">Robert<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen I went to the movie theater in 1981 to see \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark\u201d, the actress who portrayed Marion Ravenwood was Margot Kidder, not Karen Jane Allen.\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strangerdimensions.com\/2015\/01\/21\/the-berenstin-bears-problem-are-we-living-in-an-alternate-worldline\/#comment-2173547298\">Alan Wescoat<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>World Population<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI remember it being a big deal that the world population hit 6 billion in 1980, and that the estimate was 10 billion by 2000. There is a popular Japanese game\/novel (choose your own adventure style) about time travel, also adapted into manga and anime. Part of the premise is that John Titor is a real time traveler and becomes a character in the story. It first appeared in 2009 and is called \u2026 STEINS;GATE\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strangerdimensions.com\/2015\/01\/21\/the-berenstin-bears-problem-are-we-living-in-an-alternate-worldline\/#comment-2173850731\">Radio Shock<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I really need to get around to playing <em>Steins;Gate<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, do any of these strike a chord? Are they proof of parallel universes, or simply incorrect memories?
