Chris Stewart, Republican member of the House Intelligence Committee.<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Michael\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/news-events\/russia-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cohen\u00a0<\/a>testified this week that he turned against President Trump over issues ranging from his conduct during the Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin\u00a0to his controversial remarks about the Charlottesville violence in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">But a key Trump administration<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/lynne-patton-housing-official-who-sat-behind-meadows-at-cohen-hearing-defends-trump\">\u00a0official,<\/a>\u00a0who inadvertently played a central role in Wednesday\u2019s House hearing, has claimed there is another reason for Cohen\u2019s betrayal\u2014that his wife was being threatened with jail time unless he \u201cturned on\u201d Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The assertion was made in a Facebook entry by Department of Housing and Urban Development official Lynne Patton in January. The post has taken on new relevance given Cohen\u2019s testimony Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat many of you may not be aware of is the fact that I can personally confirm that the ONLY reason Michael Cohen \u2018turned on\u2019 the President of the United States is because Mueller threatened to throw his wife in jail for up to 30 years. Period,\u201d Patton posted on Jan. 18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is the co-guarantor of a $20M personal loan that Mueller discovered Michael secured back in 2015 by falsely inflating the value of his taxi medallions\u2014effectively making her part &amp; parcel to the federal charge of \u2018Making False Statements to a Financial Institution,\u2019 to which Cohen ultimately plead guilty,\u201d she continued, adding that was also the reason a \u201clongtime taxi medallion partner\u201d was granted immunity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-media facebook\">\n<div class=\"fb-post fb_iframe_widget\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/633547903\/posts\/10157135090887904\/\" data-width=\"600\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"fb:post Facebook Social Plugin\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/v2.5\/plugins\/post.php?app_id=&amp;channel=https%3A%2F%2Fstaticxx.facebook.com%2Fconnect%2Fxd_arbiter%2Fr%2FMmH55ZI0Z2G.js%3Fversion%3D44%23cb%3Dfe43549b9a38d8%26domain%3Dwww.foxnews.com%26origin%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.foxnews.com%252Ff2d74925cea0ebc%26relation%3Dparent.parent&amp;container_width=825&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2F633547903%2Fposts%2F10157135090887904%2F&amp;locale=en_US&amp;sdk=joey&amp;width=600\" name=\"f178cd55b864dec\" width=\"600px\" height=\"1000px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Despite Patton\u2019s suggestion that Mueller had jurisdiction over the loan issues, it was the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in the Southern District of New York that investigated and brought charges against Cohen related to bank fraud and personal business dealings. Mueller only charged Cohen with one count of making false statements to Congress, to which he pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n<p>Both SDNY and the special counsel\u2019s office declined to comment on Patton&#8217;s claim.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen&#8217;s attorney, Lanny Davis, also did not respond to Fox News&#8217; request for comment on the claim.<\/p>\n<p>Patton, who goes back with Cohen and said she considered him &#8220;one of my very best friends,&#8221;\u00a0is not the first to suggest Cohen\u2019s wife was at legal risk. The Wall Street Journal reported in December that prosecutors had evidence that implicated her in potential criminal activity, but reported that she was never charged.<\/p>\n<p>The president has also referred to\u00a0Cohen&#8217;s wife, tweeting in December:\u00a0\u201cHe makes up stories to get a GREAT &amp; ALREADY reduced deal for himself and get his wife and father-in-law (who has the money?) off Scott Free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During Wednesday&#8217;s hearing, Cohen was pointedly asked when he reached his &#8220;breaking point&#8221; with Trump, after having worked for him for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are several factors. Helsinki. Charlottesville. Watching the daily destruction of our civility to one another,&#8221; Cohen responded.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-media fn-video\">\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<div class=\"m video-player\" data-widget-type=\"embed\" data-video-id=\"6008700447001\" data-video-domain=\"foxnews\"><a href=\"http:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/6008700447001\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media2.foxnews.com\/BrightCove\/694940094001\/2019\/03\/01\/694940094001_6008697489001_6008700447001-vs.jpg\" alt=\"Lynne Patton hits back at Rep. Tlaib, responds to being called a 'prop' during the Cohen hearing\" \/><span class=\"overlay\">Video<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But Trump, too, challenged the veracity of Cohen\u2019s statements, citing\u00a0Cohen&#8217;s newly reported book proposal.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-6757251\/Michael-Cohen-pitched-book-claiming-Trump-not-liar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Daily Mail exclusively obtained<\/a>\u00a0a proposal dated Jan. 24, 2018, penned by Cohen, which apparently painted the president in a positive light. Cohen reportedly was shopping the pitch to book publishers just weeks before the FBI raided his office as part of the SDNY criminal investigation into his personal business dealings last April.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said the revelation of Cohen\u2019s proposal contradicts his congressional testimony &#8212; as it was written after incidents he cited as a turning point like Charlottesville &#8212; and renders him \u201ctotally discredited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cohen also testified this week that Trump was \u201ca racist,\u201d a \u201cconman,\u201d and \u201ca cheat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patton, who attended the hearing on an invitation from Republican committee member Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., ended up being pulled into the drama when Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., accused her of being a \u201cprop\u201d for Republicans to counter the claims of racism. Patton is black.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not there to represent an entire race of people.
