Their myth is now shattered.<\/p>\n<p>In a cutesy marketing video, shown below, global data analytics company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onzo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Onzo<\/strong><\/a>admits to helping utilities <strong>surveil and profile their customers \u2014 and sell direct surveillance access to their customers\u2019 homes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe use this <strong>characterized profile<\/strong> to give the utility\u2026 the ability to <strong>monetize<\/strong> their customer data by <strong>providing a direct link to appropriate third-party organizations<\/strong> based on the <strong>customer\u2019s identified character<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Watch Onzo\u2019s rather jaw dropping 90-second marketing video:<br \/>\n<em>[Onzo has removed this video from YouTube.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, what does this mean?<\/p>\n<p>See Jerry Day\u2019s excellent commentary on the implications Onzo\u2019s admission and the Internet of Things:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/2zIDW7H6XqA?rel=0\">https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/2zIDW7H6XqA?rel=0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Onzo\u2019s blatant admission comes after years of industry speculation about using \u2018smart\u2019 meters for mass surveillance <strong>\u2014<\/strong> the main home-access point in a plan of unprecedented scope and profit potential.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2015 interview, a high-level <strong>NARUC<\/strong> director signaled the intention and scope of the agenda:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI think the data [harvested by \u2018smart\u2019 meters] is going to be worth a lot more than the commodity that\u2019s being consumed to generate the data.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong>Miles Keogh, Director, Research and Grants, National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, 1 January 2015 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2015\/01\/energy-electricity-data-use-113901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">view source<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And as far back as 2011, <strong>California Public Utilities Commission<\/strong> was using the same \u201cdouble-speak\u201d language when they changed their rules to normalize meter spying and data-monetizing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI support today\u2019s decision because it adopts reasonable privacy and security rules and expands consumer and third-party access to electricity usage and pricing information.
