City leaders told Reuters, global warming has directly contributed to increasing sea levels that pushed massive amounts of water toward and into the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"hidden-c695ef6b-da48-4da4-a200-de93e0322611\" class=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"true\">\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"StoryBody__item--1cHYD\">Residents with damaged homes will receive $5,500 in compensation from the government,\u00a0<a class=\"StoryBody__link--10w8x\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-50430855\">BBC reports.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"StoryBody__paragraph--2-Doz\"><strong>Sites impacted by the flooding:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"StoryBody__item--1cHYD\"><strong>The famed St. Mark\u2019s Basilica\u00a0<\/strong>is particularly in danger as it flooded for the second time in just over a year. Saltwater has almost reached capacity in the church&#8217;s crypt, where marble columns support the structure, per Reuters.<\/li>\n<li class=\"StoryBody__item--1cHYD\"><strong>St. Mark&#8217;s Square\u00a0<\/strong>has become a &#8220;glorified&#8221; swimming pool,\u00a0<a class=\"StoryBody__link--10w8x\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/travel\/2019\/11\/14\/venice-italy-flooding-travel-tourist-sites-saint-marks-basilica\/\">the Washington Post writes.<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"StoryBody__item--1cHYD\"><strong>The Gritti Palace,\u00a0<\/strong>which hosts famous celebrities and diplomats, is currently flooded. It underwent a $60 million restoration in 2013, and was supposed to be prepared for flooding,\u00a0<a class=\"StoryBody__link--10w8x\" href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/story\/venice-floods-threatening-gritti-palace-and-other-notable-interiors\">according to Architectural Digest.<\/a>\u00a0However, it couldn&#8217;t handle the most recent flooding that overwhelmed more than<a class=\"StoryBody__link--10w8x\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-50430855\">\u00a080% of the city.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"StoryBody__paragraph--2-Doz\"><strong>The latest:<\/strong>\u00a0Venice is anticipated to experience another high tide this Sunday, according to\u00a0<a class=\"StoryBody__link--10w8x\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-italy-weather-venice\/flood-hit-venice-to-face-another-exceptional-high-tide-on-sunday-idUSKBN1XQ0LS\">Reuters<\/a>.
