title=\"List of near-parabolic comets\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_near-parabolic_comets\">near-parabolic<\/a>\u00a0orbit discovered on March 27, 2020, by astronomers using the\u00a0<a title=\"Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wide-field_Infrared_Survey_Explorer\">NEOWISE<\/a>\u00a0space telescope. For observers in the\u00a0<a title=\"Northern Hemisphere\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Hemisphere\">northern hemisphere<\/a>, in the morning the comet appears low on the northern-eastern horizon, below\u00a0<a title=\"Capella\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capella\">Capella<\/a>. In the evening it can be seen in the north-western sky. 27\u00a0million\u00a0<a title=\"Mile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mile\">mi<\/a>). This passage increases the comet&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Orbital period\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orbital_period\">orbital period<\/a>\u00a0from about 4500 years to about 6800 years.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Horizons_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F3_(NEOWISE)#cite_note-Horizons-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Its closest approach to Earth will occur on July\u00a023, 2020, 01:14\u00a0UT, at a distance of 0.69\u00a0<a title=\"Astronomical unit\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astronomical_unit\">AU<\/a>\u00a0(103\u00a0million\u00a0<a title=\"Kilometre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilometre\">km<\/a>; 64\u00a0million\u00a0<a title=\"Mile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mile\">mi<\/a>) while located in the constellation of\u00a0<a title=\"Ursa Major\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ursa_Major\">Ursa Major<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Horizons-CA_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F3_(NEOWISE)#cite_note-Horizons-CA-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Seen from Earth, the comet was less than 20\u00a0degrees from the Sun between June\u00a011 and July\u00a09, 2020. By June\u00a010, 2020, as the comet was being lost to the glare of the Sun, it was\u00a0<a title=\"Apparent magnitude\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apparent_magnitude\">apparent magnitude<\/a>\u00a07.<sup id=\"cite_ref-COBS_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F3_(NEOWISE)#cite_note-COBS-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0When the comet entered the field of view of the\u00a0<a title=\"Solar and Heliospheric Observatory\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_and_Heliospheric_Observatory\">SOHO<\/a>\u00a0spacecraft&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Large_Angle_and_Spectrometric_Coronagraph\">LASCO C3<\/a>\u00a0instrument on June\u00a022, 2020, the comet had brightened to about magnitude\u00a03.<sup id=\"cite_ref-COBS_8-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F3_(NEOWISE)#cite_note-COBS-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0By early July, Comet NEOWISE had brightened to magnitude\u00a0\u22121,<sup id=\"cite_ref-UT_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F3_(NEOWISE)#cite_note-UT-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-ATEL13853_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F3_(NEOWISE)#cite_note-ATEL13853-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0far exceeding the brightness attained by\u00a0<a title=\"C\/2020 F8 (SWAN)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F8_(SWAN)\">C\/2020 F8 (SWAN)<\/a>, and had developed a second tail. The first tail&#8217;s color is magenta and made of\u00a0<a title=\"Volatiles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volatiles\">gas and ions<\/a>; the second twin tail is a golden color and made of\u00a0<a title=\"Comet dust\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comet_dust\">dust<\/a>, like the tail of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Comet Hale-Bopp\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comet_Hale-Bopp\">Comet Hale-Bopp<\/a>, this combination resembles comet\u00a0<a title=\"C\/2011 L4\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2011_L4\">C\/2011 L4(PANSTARRS)<\/a>. The comet is brighter than\u00a0<a title=\"C\/2011 L4\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2011_L4\">C\/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS)<\/a>, but not as bright as Hale\u2013Bopp was in 1997. According to the\u00a0<a title=\"British Astronomical Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Astronomical_Association\">British Astronomical Association<\/a>, the comet brightened from a magnitude of about 8 at the beginning of June to -2 in early July.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F3_(NEOWISE)#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0This would make it brighter than Hale Bopp. However, as it was very near to the Sun, it was reported as 0 or +1 magnitude and remained that bright for only a few days. After perihelion, the comet began to fade at about the same rate as it had previously brightened.<\/p>\n<p>From the\u00a0<a title=\"Infrared\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Infrared\">infrared<\/a>\u00a0signature Joseph Masiero estimates the diameter of the\u00a0<a title=\"Comet nucleus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comet_nucleus\">comet nucleus<\/a>\u00a0to be approximately 5\u00a0km (3\u00a0mi).<sup id=\"cite_ref-discovery_date_1-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C\/2020_F3_(NEOWISE)#cite_note-discovery_date-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The nucleus is similar in size to many\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Short-period comet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Short-period_comet\">short-period comets<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"2P\/Encke\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/7P\/Pons-Winnecke\">7P\/Pons-Winnecke<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"8P\/Tuttle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/8P\/Tuttle\">8P\/Tuttle<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"14P\/Wolf\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/14P\/Wolf\">14P\/Wolf<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"19P\/Borrelly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/19P\/Borrelly\">19P\/Borrelly<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-SBDB_12-0\" class=\"reference\"><a
